At the Throne

A market economy
  requires a market society;
  that is
  a society that lives
  within the boundaries
  & limitations
  defined by the market.

As individuals
  we centre our decisions,
  jobs, work, education
  on money
  over & above all.

As a society
  our governments
  all measure their success
  by the health and growth 

  of the economy. 

But more money does not mean
  more happiness
  or thriving
  or life
  or flourishing
  or wellness
  or health.

We are slaves
  when we live within
  the boundaries and limitations
  defined by the market
  without critically subverting
  the destructive ways
  or intentionally placing
  some value-
  love
  family
  friendship
  faith
  ecology
  goodness-
  above money.

As a society-
  we gather together
  & worship at the throne
  of the false God Mammon
  when we allow our governments
  and businesses
  and churches
  and schools
  and institutions
  to operate so.

What If II

What if we were all safe, secure
and committed to the whole?

Would humanity stagnate
into a boring pool
of mundane meaninglessness?

Or would we rise up
into the greatness
of our full potential?

Is the greatness of humanity
found in an enduring struggle?

Or can we learn to thrive
and grow
and explore
and expand
without subjecting parts of our family
to suffering?

There will always be pain with growth.

There is always risk to advance.

But doesn’t nature present us with enough challenges?
must we wield the knives of our own torture?
